MSU Denver Calendar

Industry:

The project began with a request from a university client to design a calendar that represented MSU Denver while showcasing artwork created by students in the university's art programs. The challenge was to create a functional calendar that balanced institutional identity with artistic expression, allowing student work to remain the focus without losing its connection to the university.

I saw an opportunity to extend the calendar's visual language into a broader stationery system, exploring how a single design concept could support multiple applications while maintaining consistency and recognition.

Introduction

The project began with a request from a university client to design a calendar that represented MSU Denver while showcasing artwork created by students in the university's art programs. The challenge was to create a functional calendar that balanced institutional identity with artistic expression, allowing student work to remain the focus without losing its connection to the university.

I saw an opportunity to extend the calendar's visual language into a broader stationery system, exploring how a single design concept could support multiple applications while maintaining consistency and recognition.

Problem solving

My goal was to develop a visual system that balanced MSU Denver's established identity with the individuality of student artwork. I focused on the university's Roadrunner identity, school colors, and recognizable visual elements, using them as a foundation for a design that felt connected to the institution without overpowering the featured artwork.

A central challenge was establishing a consistent typographic and graphic structure that could accommodate different artistic styles. Through hierarchy, composition, and color relationships, I explored how the calendar could remain cohesive while allowing each student's work to stand independently.

Rather than limiting the design to a single product, I considered how these principles could translate into stationery and promotional materials, creating a flexible system that extended beyond the original assignment.

Implementation

I developed a calendar system that incorporated MSU Denver's school colors, Roadrunner-inspired visual elements, and student artwork into a unified composition. Typography and layout played a central role in organizing information, establishing hierarchy, and creating a consistent framework that allowed different artworks to be featured without disrupting the overall identity.

Building on the calendar, I expanded the visual language into letterheads and promotional materials, applying the same typographic principles, color relationships, and graphic elements across multiple formats. Each application was designed to feel connected while adapting to its own functional requirements.

This process allowed me to explore how an established institutional identity could be interpreted through a more expressive visual system while maintaining clarity, consistency, and flexibility.

Results

Results

The final concept evolved from a standalone university calendar into a cohesive stationery and promotional system that celebrated MSU Denver's identity and its community of student artists. Although the project remained conceptual, the expanded applications demonstrated how a single visual direction could support multiple formats while maintaining a recognizable identity.

The project strengthened my understanding of typography as a foundational element of visual systems and reinforced the importance of balancing creative expression with established brand guidelines. More importantly, it encouraged me to think beyond the initial client request, recognizing how thoughtful design decisions can transform an individual deliverable into a broader, adaptable system.
